Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.

Donald Trump is celebrating a month in the White House on Thursday, having ruffled feathers with a slew of executive orders, Elon Musk-inspired mass firings from the federal government, aggressive tariff announcements and, most recently, by lashing out at Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The president called Zelensky a “dictator” this week after the embattled leader accused him of living in a Russian “disinformation space”, only for Trump to then pronounce himself a “king” on social media.
The latter is hosting a Black History Month event today before addressing the Republican Governors Association later.
Vice President JD Vance has already spoken at CPAC in Maryland while Trump and Musk’s purge of the federal bureaucracy continues apace, with 6,700 probationary employees of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) set to be fired as tax season looms.
Speaking on Fox News on Wednesday, Trump’s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick said the administration’s goal was ultimately to abolish the IRS entirely.
Also on Wednesday, the president addressed an investor summit in Miami backed by the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund and signed an executive order calling for the scrapping of federal benefits for undocumented migrants, the latest skirmish in his crackdown on illegal immigration.
Mike Waltz says Trump can go ‘toe-to-toe’ with Putin
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said Donald Trump can go “toe-to-toe” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin when asked about concerns that the president may be under his influence.
“If there’s anybody in this world that can go toe-to-toe with Putin, that can go toe-to-toe with Xi, that can go toe-to-toe with Kim Jong Un … it’s Donald J. Trump,” Waltz said.
The question came after Trump echoed Kremlin propaganda on Wednesday, calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator,” despite the fact he was democratically elected.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth poised to fire top Defense officials, report says
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who called for Pentagon budget cuts, could be poised to fire several top generals and senior leaders perceived as too political or too close Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, CNN reports.
This list includes Gen. CQ Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to the outlet.
Hegseth criticized Brown for some time before his confirmation but said he looked forward to working with him as he was sworn in.
“First of all, you’ve got to fire the chairman of the Joint Chiefs,” Hegseth said in November. “But any general that was involved – general, admiral, whatever – that was involved in any of the DEI woke s*** has got to go. Either you’re in for warfighting, and that’s it. That’s the only litmus test we care about.”

Trump administration responds to lawsuit from seeking access to detainees at Guantanamo Bay
The Trump administration has responded to a lawsuit filed by immigration attorneys seeking access to people detained by the government at Guantanamo Bay.
The administration revealed in the filing that officials have detained 178 people who all have orders for removal to Venezuela.
Agents are housing “higher-threat immigration detainees” in the notorious Camp VI jail, while “the lower-threat detainees” are being “housed in and around the Migrant Operations Center.”
There are also written instructions in English and Spanish for migrants to make phone calls to counsel, the administration’s filing claims, but it is unclear where these are posted.

His financial disclosures state he plans to keep the stock if confirmed.

Fox & Friends celebrates Trump declaring himself ‘king’ because it’s making Democrats ‘crazy’
The denizens of Donald Trump’s favorite morning show cheered the president on Thursday for hailing himself as a “king” after striking down New York’s congestion pricing, claiming he’s merely “making fun” of Democrats and driving them “crazy” by giving them “a little bait.”
The Fox & Friends hosts’ celebratory reaction to the president’s declaration, which they also said was a message to other “liberal” cities, comes just days after Fox News praised Trump for “triggering the libs” by parroting an authoritarian quote to suggest he is above the law.
Here’s more from Justin Baragona.
