SAN FRANCISCO – AAC Clyde Space is starting work on a $30.7 million euro ($32.2 million) maritime domain awareness constellation that pairs communications with remote sensing.
Satellites in the INFLECION constellation will be equipped with VHF Data Exchange System, Signal Intelligence and Synthetic Aperture Radar technologies to enhance maritime security, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
“With this project, we are using space technology to tackle real challenges in the maritime industry,” AAC Clyde CEO Luis Gomes said in a statement.
The constellation, scheduled to be completed in 2028, also is a “key step” in the growth of AAC Clyde’s space-data-as-a-service business, Gomes added. The company will operate the constellation and deliver data to customers.
Unprecedented Challenges
AAC Clyde is starting to define the INFLECION constellation under $850,000 euro European Space Agency contract announced Feb. 17. In addition to ESA, the U.K. Space Agency is providing INFLECION program funding through an ESA Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems Partnership Project.
“The maritime industry faces unprecedented challenges from supply chain disruptions and shifting trade patterns,” Laurent Jaffart, ESA director of connectivity and secure communications, said in a statement. “INFLECION will provide the space-based tools needed to navigate these challenges while protecting our marine environment.”
The definition phase of the INFLECION constellation will be completed in 2025. During a 15-month development phase to follow, AAC Clyde will build prototypes and systems. In the final phase of the program, AAC Clyde will work with industry partners to conduct testing and prepare to offer commercial services.
AAC Clyde’s INFLECION partners include AST Marine, Bright Ascension, Craft Prospect, Horizon Technologies, Iceye UK, Omanos Analytics, Nash Maritime, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Saab UK. Scotland’s Heriot Watt University and University of Strathclyde are also providing expertise for the INFLECION program.
