DNV has been appointed owner’s engineer for the 1GW Abydos for Renewable Energy (AFRE) solar project in Egypt, which includes a 600MWh battery energy storage system.

The project, developed by AMEA Power, is located in Benban and is expected to generate 3100GWh annually, powering over 500,000 homes and avoiding 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

DNV will support the scheme through feasibility review, design assessment, construction supervision and commissioning oversight.

“This project demands both technical rigour and regional insight,” said Santiago Blanco (pictured), executive vice president and regional director for the Middle East at DNV.

“Our role is to safeguard performance and reliability from day one, helping AMEA Power deliver an asset that is robust, future-ready, and aligned with Egypt’s long-term energy goals,” he said.

The facility faces desert-specific challenges including extreme heat, dust and complex grid conditions.

DNV said it will advise on layout, grid compliance, and battery safety based on international standards.

The project is also expected to create around 4000 construction jobs and contribute to Egypt’s Vision 2035 energy strategy.

AMEA Power is headquartered in Dubai and active across more than 20 countries, with a pipeline spanning wind, solar, storage and green hydrogen.

“Large-scale renewable projects like Abydos 2 are essential to delivering on Egypt’s energy transition,” Blanco said.
