Space Force unveils strategic plan for AI integration

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Space Force released a new strategy blueprint outlining how it plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations and improve AI literacy among its personnel. The document, titled “Data and Artificial Intelligence FY 2025 Strategic Action Plan,” was published March 19 in response to Defense Department directives calling for a more data-driven and AI-enabled force.

“The Space Force recognizes the critical role that data and artificial intelligence will play in maintaining space superiority,” Col. Nathen Iven, acting deputy chief of space operations for cyber and data, stated in the document.

The strategic plan outlines initiatives to “foster data literacy, equip our guardians with cutting-edge technologies, and drive innovation,” according to Iven.

Based on trends in the private sector, space domain awareness represents a primary focus area for AI implementation. The technology is used to process extensive data sets to track and identify objects in orbit, including satellites and debris. AI systems analyze patterns to detect anomalies and assess potential threats, providing timely warnings about hostile actions.

Experts note that AI capabilities have become essential for avoiding operational surprises and ensuring decision-makers receive actionable intelligence. The technology could predict space environment anomalies and recommend responses while using machine learning to detect camouflage, concealment, and deception techniques employed against satellites.

AI applications may enable spacecraft to operate autonomously in contested environments, allowing satellites to take self-preserving actions without human intervention.

The plan acknowledges the need for digital fluency among Space Force personnel, emphasizing AI literacy as necessary for addressing operational challenges. Key priorities include making data “accessible, understandable, secure and trustworthy” while advancing a data and AI-driven organizational culture.

The Space Force’s AI initiative, Iven noted, aligns with broader Pentagon priorities. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has emphasized leveraging AI technologies as part of technology competition with China. During his confirmation hearing, Hegseth said AI represents a powerful capability the U.S. must utilize, given its advanced state in the commercial sector.

Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg has similarly stated that the Defense Department must “fully capitalize on the benefits of artificial intelligence” across business operations, testing, and next-generation weapons system acquisitions.
