Taiyo Power & Storage has sold a ready-to-build 42MW greenfield solar project in Swansea to Infinis Solar Developments.
Parc Solar Caenewydd is expected to produce 43.8GWh of renewable energy per year and will be co-located with a 46MW battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project, which will be built across 190 acres of land in Gowerton, will help power approximately 22,000 homes and offset approximately 8,445 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
With planning consent obtained in the fourth quarter of 2024, the scheme is expected to start producing energy by Q4 2026.
Parc Solar Caenewydd supports the Welsh government’s target to generate 100% of the nation’s electricity demand from renewable sources.
The scheme will also allow for continued agricultural production via sheep grazing among solar panels.
Taiyo is a joint venture between Kajima Partnerships and Low Carbon Alliance.
Since its inception in 2021, Taiyo has been developing a portfolio of ground-mounted solar and battery energy storage facilities across the UK.
Taiyo director and managing director at Kajima Partnerships Chris Gill said: “As our second UK project to achieve planning consent and subsequently sold to Infinis, this scheme in Gowerton represents yet another milestone in Kajima’s strategy to deliver renewable energy across the UK.
“As a social impact investor and developer, we are committed to developing additional solar energy assets to improve the nation’s renewable energy capacity, and supporting local communities in enhancing climate resilience and reducing energy costs.”
Taiyo director and Low Carbon Alliance managing director Simon Crowe said: “Solar power is vital to decarbonising the grid.
“Projects like Gowerton are central to building a sustainable future, providing affordable, secure, and independent energy while advancing the UK’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050.
“We remain focused on delivering initiatives that empower communities and achieve our nation’s strategic energy goals.”
Director of development and construction at Infinis Andrew Leeding said: “We are delighted to have secured the Gowerton project, further bolstering Infinis’ rapidly growing solar portfolio and furthering our commitment to continued investment in renewables.
“As a leading generator of low carbon energy, we look forward to constructing and operating the project and delivering another important project in moving the UK closer to its 2030 clean power target.”
