TotalEnergies and Singapore’s RGE have joined forces to develop a utility-scale solar and storage project in Indonesia.
In a key milestone, the Singapore Energy Market Authority has today granted a conditional licence to their joint venture Singa Renewables to import 1GW of renewable electricity from Indonesia.
The partners also today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI) to jointly develop a subsea interconnector to import electricity from Indonesia to Singapore.
Earlier this week, the partners signed a co-investment agreement to develop, build and operate a hybrid facility consisting of a solar power plant, a battery storage system (BESS), and a submarine cable in Riau Province, Indonesia. This agreement was signed on 28 May at an official ceremony in Jakarta, in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
The project will provide renewable and stable electricity to customers in Singapore, as well as to industrial complexes located near the solar site in Riau Province, Indonesia.
Throughout the development of the project, the partners will draw on TotalEnergies’ global expertise in large energy projects, while leveraging RGE’s presence in Indonesia and Singapore.
TotalEnergies’ president for Asia Helle Kristoffersen (pictured left) said: “I would like to thank the Singaporean authorities for granting the necessary licences for this major electricity import initiative, which we look forward to developing with RGE.
“This project will contribute to Singapore’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, while supporting the economic development of Riau Province, Indonesia.
“This initiative also illustrates TotalEnergies’ commitment to the energy transition and security of supply in ASEAN.”
Director general of RGE Imelda Tanoto (pictured right) said: “We are committed to contributing to the acceleration of the energy transition in the region.
“Obtaining the conditional licence represents a key milestone that confirms our role in strengthening regional collaboration and achieving decarbonisation goals, as well as creating sustainable value for communities, the economy, and governments.”
